Velvet curtains: examples and photos in the interior

Modern interior design allows almost everything - both convenient and minimalistic solutions and royal luxurious are in fashion. In an ordinary city apartment, you can hang exquisite velvet curtains, thereby ennobling the look of your home.

Features and Benefits

Velvet is a dense fabric with a soft high pile. They invented this strange matter in China and for a very long time kept secret the subtleties of its creation. This knowledge entered Europe in the 13th century. Velvet really liked the kings and noble persons of the Old World. Local weavers began to create their own velvet, and soon a whole host of its species appeared, in particular:

  • Velveteen (or "Manchester" velvet).
  • Velours.
  • Moket, trip, shenill - velvet fabrics for upholstery and interior use.
  • Panbarhat (fabric with an extruded pattern).
  • Plis (cotton velvet).
  • Plush (velvet with a very high pile).

Any velvet fabric is difficult to manufacture. It is this (in addition to the cost of raw materials, of course) that determines its high cost. In a special way, the threads are intertwined so that two canvases are obtained simultaneously - as if one on the other. In this case, the canvases are bonded to each other with silk or synthetic thread, which afterwards forms a pile. Then, with a special knife, the canvases are cut across, so that velvet is obtained.

The classic and most expensive velvet is made of silk, but modern technology allows us to produce this fabric from synthetics, cotton and wool.

Velvet is an ideal material for curtains. It is dense, which means that the curtains will not transmit light. It forms amazingly beautiful folds. The severity of the material and soft texture give the room a very expensive look.

Among the shortcomings of this material as curtains, one can note the difficulty in maintenance (it is best to hand over such products to dry cleaning), the tendency to accumulate dust and heaviness - velvet curtains will require a very durable metal cornice.

See below for more details.

Models

Velvet curtains gravitate towards the classics. Most often, these are two curtains from the eaves to the floor. They can be mounted on a plastic or round cornice. They can be assembled on a curtain tape with hooks, tightly draped. Curtains made of fleecy material on the grommets look very nice - metal rings are installed strictly at an equal distance from each other - this allows the fabric to hang down with perfectly even folds. At the same time, it is very easy to move them away and move along the ledge, the severity of velvet in this case is almost not felt.

Direct velvet curtains are best complemented with tulle - but rather, not for protection from the sun, but for the full picture and completeness of the interior.

If the window is small, you can decorate it with one velvet curtain - it also looks very nice. A curtain is hung under the curtain. In the afternoon, the curtain is pushed to the side, and the tulle covers the window opening.

It is perfectly acceptable to make velvet curtains shortened - for example, just below the windowsill. In this case, they must be very voluminous so that they form a large number of beautiful folds.

Velvet curtains of any length very beautifully snag with pickups. If there are two curtains - pickups are made on both sides of the window, if one - on one. Although if you make a mount for picking up from two sides, you can "pull" the curtain to one side or the other. The hooks can be wide velvet, satin, braided from cords.

If we talk about accessories, the style of the interior is important.

For luxurious rooms in the style of French kings, a lambrequin is sure to come in handy. It can be direct, it can be draped in a semicircle or in some other elegant way. To add pomposity and chic, golden twisted cords, brushes, frills, curtains trimmed with satin or wide lace are suitable. Such models will look best in a large living room or bedroom.

Today it is almost impossible to find curtains from classic velvet on the market. It is too expensive and not very convenient to operate. Manufacturers of curtain fabrics “invented” their velvet - a fairly dense fabric with a thick pile, shiny and beautifully draped. It is believed that the best samples of such fabrics are produced in Turkey and Poland. You can choose both fabric and ready-made curtains made in Turkey.

Suitable styles

As mentioned above, velvet is a hallmark of the classic style in the interior. Feel free to hang such curtains if:

  • You have big You can even say a huge living room or bedroom.
  • Do you want to give the room a luxurious and rich look.

The classic style is quite strict.

He loves the right lines and symmetry. Ideally, if there are two curtains. They must be absolutely even and the same. If you take them to the hooks, make sure that it looks 100% symmetrical and at the same height, and the place of “meeting” the curtains on the ledge is exactly in the middle. Lambrequin should be of the correct form and also absolutely symmetrical.

Draperies should not "revenge" the floor - ideally, they should end before they reach the floor a couple of centimeters. Although there is such a technique - hang very long curtains on a small window so that 30-40 cm of fabric lay on the floor. Such curtains are sure to be picked up by hooks, but still some amount of fabric remains on the floor. It looks very stylish and visually increases the height of the ceilings.

For the classic style in the room, you can use smooth velvet or fabric with embroidery, dusting, decorative inserts. Both matte and brilliant options will look equally good.

But in a modern interior, plain matt velvet will look best. It is perfect, for example, to the Hi-tech style.

Plain gray or black velvet curtains are ideal for a white and black interior with chrome shiny details. The best model for such an interior is simple and smooth floor-to-ceiling curtains. No lambrequins, pickups and other decor are needed. Velvet fabric will add warmth and “domesticate” the cold office Hi-tech.

Definitely “yes” can be said for velvet curtains for the fashionable Loft style. Thick and dense pile material perfectly complements cold concrete or brick walls. A little elaborate, but very organic in such an interior will look like curtains made of velvet in a rib.

If the wall is red brick, then dark curtains in burgundy or dark gray are perfect. For a white brick wall, curtains made of velvet fabrics of light gray or beige color will become good companions.

Loft involves large windows, so the curtains in this style - from floor to ceiling. Fastening - a curtain tape or eyelets. Lambrequins and other accessories are not required.

Velvet curtains fit perfectly into the oriental style of interior decoration. The decor of the room in these directions is rich, rich and expensive.

Designers usually choose bright and iridescent velvet for such rooms, sometimes with a sparkle. No pastel shades, only bright colors - red, green, navy blue, gold, burgundy. Curtains should be heavy and well draped. The folds are rounded, the presence of pickups is mandatory. Brushes fit here, trim along the edge of the curtains with braid with small pompoms. You can add twisted cords.

Lambrequin can be either soft or hard.

Pay attention to the lambrequins, as if “carved” from the bottom - that is, their edge is not even, but is ornately carved by oriental motifs.

In the eastern style, curtains can be combined - for example, velvet will blend perfectly with satin. Satin pieces can be sewn at the junction of two canvases, or you can make a satin back side of the curtains. In this case, the curtains are not collected for grabs, but are bent outward so that the wrong side is visible. By color, it is better to dwell on a contrast combination.

Like everything beautiful, curtains made of velvet fabrics will require careful care.

Washing or other radical “general cleaning” of such curtains is a very responsible and one-time event that cannot be carried out too often. Experts advise from time to time to carry out only the so-called preventive cleaning.

To remove dust from fleecy curtains, use a vacuum cleaner - many modern appliances in the kit have a special brush for curtains and furniture. It is very small in size. You need to carefully walk with a vacuum cleaner near the curtains so that the dust from them gets into the vacuum cleaner, and the fabric itself does not tighten.

You can try to “knock out” the curtains: gently remove them from the ledge and gently shake them several times.

Be sure to brush the vacuum cleaner to walk along the ledge, as well as "blow through" the pelmet, cords and brushes.

When purchasing fabric, consult the seller about the intricacies of caring for it. There are materials that can only be cleaned with dry cleaning. If this is your case, carefully remove the curtains from the eaves and take them to the collection point. The curtain cleaning masters advise before taking the curtains off the window and taking pictures of them. The photo must be attached to the curtains so that dry cleaners understand how it should look after all the procedures. Such a trick will protect your investment.

If your fabric can be washed, do it only with liquid detergent, loading the automatic machine halfway. This way you guarantee a thorough rinse. The washing mode should be the most delicate - “wool”, “silk”.

All decorative elements - frills, soutache, braid before washing or dry cleaning will have to be torn off, and then sewn back.
