How to paste wallpaper on the ceiling of concrete, drywall, plywood and OSB

Ceiling decoration involves the use of several options. This can be the installation of a suspended or suspended ceiling structure, painting or wallpapering. The latter option has always been popular, but with the advent of new modern technologies, it is gradually forgotten. The fact is that the process of wallpapering on the ceiling is characterized by difficulty and inconvenience. However, using wallpaper, you can create a unique interior that will not be found in any apartment. Despite the decline in popularity, it is still necessary to talk about the technique of wallpapering on the ceiling, at least for beginners.

Wallpapering on the ceiling has several advantages, among them the following can be distinguished:

  • Low material costs compared with the installation of suspended and suspended ceilings.
  • The initial color of the wallpaper lasts longer than that of a whitewashed or painted surface. Consequently, there is no need for frequent repairs.
  • Porous wallpapers have good soundproofing properties.

The disadvantage of gluing the ceiling with wallpaper is the extreme inconvenience of the process, since all work must be done overhead. Therefore, it is important to know how to stick wallpaper on the ceiling to one person.

When choosing wallpaper sticking as a way to decorate the ceiling, it is important to consider the following nuances:

  • Experimenting with the texture of the wallpaper is desirable in large rooms. Here, the flaws of the decoration will be less noticeable than in small rooms.
  • Relief ceilings visually make the room smaller, so they are also used in large rooms.
  • With the help of wallpaper you can divide the room into zones and increase the level of comfort. Thanks to this, wallpapering on the ceiling of a one-room apartment becomes almost the only way to finish.

It is very important to responsibly approach the choice of wallpaper, you should take into account all the factors and features of the room where repairs are planned.

Types of material and its features

There are several types of wallpaper, each of which has its own characteristics. This should be remembered when choosing a material for a certain type of room:

  • Paper wallpapers are the most common and cheapest, but are suitable only for cosmetic repairs.
  • Liquid wallpaper is a liquid mixture. As a result of finishing the ceiling with such material, a seamless and perfectly even surface is obtained.
  • Vinyl wallpapers are very popular due to their strength, durability and high resistance to moisture.
  • Non-woven wallpaper is durable, elastic and abrasion resistant.
  • Textile wallpaper is a textile fabric on a paper or non-woven basis.

In addition, there are wallpapers for painting, modern models of this type can be painted more than 10 times. At the same time, it is not necessary to remove wallpaper from the ceiling.

In general, the choice of wallpaper depends on the preferences of the owner, any type of wallpaper can be used if the operating conditions allow it. However, it is worth considering that in rooms with low ceilings it is better to stick light colors, it is better to give preference to a small and dull drawing. To visually reduce the height of the ceiling, it is better to glue wallpaper in dark colors.

Preparation of materials and tools

To independently solve the problem of how to paste wallpaper on the ceiling, you will need the following:

  • Stepladder or other device for working at height.
  • Roulette.
  • Pencil or marker.
  • Bucket.
  • Brush and roller. It is advisable to use tools with a long handle.
  • Bath with a special platform for the roller.
  • Soft dry rags.
  • Adhesive stirrer.

The process of wallpapering the ceiling is characterized by great inconvenience, so it is recommended to invite friends or relatives to help. Otherwise, you will need to study materials, how to paste wallpaper on the ceiling alone.

Surface preparation for work

For the high-quality performance of any finishing work, it is necessary to carefully prepare the work surface. Wallpapering on the ceiling in this regard is no exception. In particular, we are talking about the following:

  • Old wallpaper must be removed, followed by cleaning the surface from traces of glue.
  • The whitewashed ceiling should be washed and several layers of putty applied.
  • Defects in the form of irregularities or slopes are smoothed out using putty, with a significant difference in height it is recommended to use plasterboard sheets.
  • Wallpapering on the putty ceiling is performed after preliminary priming. It is possible to apply a primer using a regular brush. After the primer layer has dried, the surface is treated with sandpaper and the wallpaper is glued to the ceiling. It should be noted that priming the ceiling is not a mandatory procedure. However, this process makes the adhesion of the working surface with the finishing material more durable.
  • Before gluing the ceiling with wallpaper, you must mark the ceiling. At the same time, it is important that the wallcoverings are perpendicular to one of the walls.
  • Before you paste the wallpaper on the ceiling, you must turn off the power, and the place of fastening the lighting devices should be sealed with masking tape.

Wallpaper Cutting Rules

A beautiful ceiling with a minimum number of flaws can be obtained only with the correct cutting of wallpaper. You can achieve this result if you follow a specific instruction:

  • Roll the wallpaper stack face up and roll it to the maximum possible length.
  • Using a tape measure, measure the distance on the ceiling between opposing walls and lay it on a wallpaper strip. At this point, make the appropriate mark with a pencil or marker.

  • At the mark, the strip is bent, the ends are aligned and the resulting bend is smoothed.
  • Next, with a clerical knife, a strip is cut along the fold line.

Ceiling marking

After completing the preparations and cutting the stripes of the desired length, it is necessary to make the corresponding marks on the ceiling. In particular, we are talking about the line along which the first strip of wallpaper will be glued. You can get a straight line with a rope rubbed with chalk. To do this, you need to hammer one nail into the opposite walls. A rope pre-grated with chalk is tied to these nails and pulled as much as possible. Next, the rope must be pulled and sharply released. The result of these actions will be an even trace of chalk.

Direct wallpapering

The process of performing work at this stage is determined by the type of wallpaper chosen for the ceiling. For example, when using paper or vinyl wallpaper, the adhesive is applied to the material, and in the case of non-woven wallpaper, the adhesive is applied directly to the ceiling. In addition, when applying glue to non-woven wallpaper, you should wait a while, at the same time, it is important to stick paper wallpaper immediately after applying the adhesive.

As for the location of the strips, one rule applies here, according to which the direction of the strips should be strictly parallel to the wall with the window opening. In this case, the joints of the bands become almost invisible.

The task of properly gluing wallpaper on the ceiling must be solved in accordance with specific instructions.

- Preparation of adhesive

In most cases, construction stores offer ready-made adhesives for each type of wallpaper. The mixture may be in dry or liquid form. You can prepare glue for wallpaper according to the instructions that the manufacturer applies to his products.

In any case, glue should be mixed well before use. In this case, the composition should have a good density so that the fixation of wallpaper on the ceiling is maximum.

- Application of adhesive to the wallpaper

In order to properly glue the wallpaper to the surface of the ceiling, it is necessary to correctly apply the adhesive composition to the cut strips. For this purpose, you should take one strip and carefully spread it on a flat surface. Glue can be applied with a brush, making strokes from the center of the strip to its edges. All actions should be as neat as possible, only in this case you can avoid getting glue on the front side of the wallpaper.

- Sticking the first strip

At this stage, the solution to the question of how to paste the wallpaper on the ceiling yourself is guided by several instructions, depending on the number of people participating in the process of wallpapering. If the work is performed by one person, then the band is folded with an accordion, applied with an edge to the intended line and the wallpaper is gradually straightened.

In this case, the material must be smoothed with a soft cloth, roller or using a special brush-ironer. Wallpapering with the fate of two people is performed as follows: one participant in the process takes the strip by the edges and rises to a stepladder or other device for working at height, the second participant at this time gently holds the strip and gradually straightens it.

- Pressing bands

To strip the wallpaper firmly adhered to the work surface, it is necessary to remove excess glue and air bubbles from under the glued wallpaper. To do this, you can use a clean roller, rolling it in the direction from the middle of the strip to its edges. Excess glue is immediately cleaned with a clean rag or sponge.

- Sticking the remaining strips

The remaining strips of wallpaper are pasted in a similar pattern, so there is no particular difficulty in solving the problem of how to attach wallpaper to the ceiling. However, difficulty can be encountered when fitting a new strip to an already pasted material. In this case, it is very important to tightly dock the strips and prevent overlapping. When using wallpaper with a pattern or pattern, it is recommended to combine the strips in the process of cutting the material into certain areas.

In order to qualitatively solve the question of how to properly paste the wallpaper on the ceiling, it is very important to check the absence of drafts. In addition, at the end of the process, doors and windows should not be opened for several more days.

Wallpapering the ceiling with wallpaper by one person can be facilitated if you make your own device in the form of the letter "T". It can be made from plasterboard profile.

The consequences of improper wallpaper sticking to the ceiling

Poor quality work and non-compliance with instructions can cause unpleasant consequences, such as a lag in the wallpaper strip from the work surface.

This defect is observed very often, its cause most often is the following points:

  • Sticking on old, peeling plaster. Such a defect can only be avoided by thoroughly cleaning the surface of the old layer of plaster and paint. Wallpapering on top of calcareous or chalky whitewash leads to a similar result. Therefore, experienced craftsmen strongly recommend that before gluing the ceiling wallpaper to remove the old coating and treat the work surface with a fixing compound.

  • Incorrect application of the adhesive. In most cases, sticking wallpaper on the ceiling with your own hands is accompanied by applying an adhesive composition to either the work surface or wallpaper strips. But some types of finishing material require the application of glue, both on the surface of the ceiling and directly on the wallpaper canvas. Glue should be selected in accordance with the type of wallpaper, since there are adhesive compositions specifically for the heavy types of this material. The composition is recommended to be used thicker than indicated in the instructions from the manufacturer. The working surface must be pre-treated and carefully leveled. For thinner wallpaper sheets, you need the most even surface. Thick textured wallpaper can mask minor defects, so careful alignment is not required. For good adhesion of the working surface with the finishing material, it is necessary to carry out priming of the ceiling and sanding.
  • The presence of air bubbles. This defect appears when the web is poorly rolled with a special roller. The included lighting makes the bubbles under the glued wallpaper especially noticeable.
  • Stains on the wallpaper may appear when the wallcoverings are soaked for a long time or when the adhesive composition is too thick on the material.

The rules of operation of wallpaper glued to the ceiling

Each owner wants repairs in an apartment or house to be carried out as rarely as possible. To do this, you need to know the better to glue the ceiling, and select the material in accordance with the purpose of the room and the peculiarity of its use. In addition, it is correct to use and care for the finishing material.

Firstly, varnishing helps to extend the life of the wallpaper glued to the ceiling.

Secondly, the use of wallpaper for painting allows not only to change the design of the room, but also to save on finishing materials. If any parts or edges of the wallpaper are peeled off, it is enough to smear these parts with adhesive and to press them well against the ceiling with a clean roller.

Embossed wallpaper has the advantage of being able to absorb dust and unpleasant odors. Therefore, during the operation of such a material requires periodic cleaning with a vacuum cleaner, dry cloth or brush. Wallpaper on the ceiling, resistant to high humidity, can be wiped with a cloth dipped in clean water.

Thus, the question of how to properly paste the wallpaper on the ceiling can be called quite complicated. However, subject to all recommendations, this work is quite accessible for independent implementation. The main condition for wallpapering the ceiling is to strictly follow the sequence of actions. Only in this case can difficulties and troubles be avoided during the further operation of the ceiling.

Necessary tools for work

Before starting work on gluing the ceiling with a wallpaper, you need to stock up not only with the wallpaper itself, but also with tools that will not only simplify the work, but also help make the final result ideal.
List of essentials:

  1. Paint brushes - one narrow and one wide, they are very convenient for applying glue.
  2. A construction knife, scissors and a paint trowel (35 cm wide) - these devices are used for cutting and wallpaper, as well as for trimming excess at the edges.
  3. Roller (roller) stitching - it is convenient for them to roll wallpaper at the joints, so that they are almost invisible.
A large bucket and a paint bath - glue is diluted in the bucket, and it is easier to apply it from the bath to a wallpaper or ceiling.
  4. Paint roller 25 cm wide - allows you to evenly apply glue to the surface.
  5. Painting plumb line - it is easy to mark with it.
  6. A cut of soft cloth - will be needed in order to wipe off excess glue from the surface and smooth the glued wallpaper.
  7. Stepladders or scaffolding make it easy to get to the ceiling and wallpaper.
  8. A paint pencil allows you to mark the direction of the paintings and their order in accordance with the figure.
  9. The film, which should cover the floor around the perimeter of the room.
  10. Construction tape measure - with its help it is easy to measure the length of the blade, as well as the dimensions of the ceiling.
  11. Wallpaper spatula - designed for high-quality smoothing of wallpaper.

Calculation of the required number of wallpapers per ceiling

Wallpaper for the ceiling should always be bought with a margin and immediately paying attention to the fact that they were from the same batch, because even a slight discrepancy in the shade on the ceiling will be very noticeable.

A large number of different types of wallpaper are sold in stores, from different manufacturers, because the roll size from one manufacturer may differ from another. Because of this, before buying wallpaper, you must first measure the ceiling itself and, based on this, count the number of rolls needed for gluing it.

Since the wallpaper on the ceiling is glued perpendicular to the window opening, the number of paintings is considered along the length of the wall on which this window opening is located. To do this, you need to measure the length of this wall and divide it by the width of the roll, the selected wallpaper - in the end you get the right number of paintings.

To calculate how many such canvases fit in one roll - you need to take the total length of the roll and divide it by the length of the second wall and add 10 cm to it in reserve.

Based on the above calculations, it is possible to determine how many rolls will be needed to paste this surface. To do this, you need to divide the total number of required panels by the number of paintings in one roll and add 0.5 - 1 roll in reserve.

When calculating the amount of wallpaper with a pattern or ornament, it must be taken into account that the pattern requires a match and to the length of each cloth plus the length of the rapport add a report - the distance through which the ornament is repeated (it is indicated on the roll).

Paper

Paper wallpaper is a non-woven fabric with a pattern or ornament applied to it, they can be both smooth and embossed. They should be glued to a carefully prepared surface - perfectly even and smooth. Since they do not hide even the most minor defects, they are also easily torn during careless handling.

Non-woven

Non-woven wallpaper is a more practical option than paper, they, due to their relief structure, are able to visually align the glued surface. But they are heavy because it is important to pay attention to their weight, it should not exceed 110 grams per square meter.

Vinyl

Vinyl wallpapers for the ceiling are usually produced on a non-woven basis, and on top they are covered with a vinyl coating - an elastic film made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). They are dense and durable, as well as moisture resistant, but their significant drawback is that they are not breathable, therefore they are best used in non-residential rooms - corridor, bathroom, kitchen. When gluing vinyl wallpapers, glue must be applied both to the wallpaper itself and to the ceiling.

Fiberglass wallpaper

Cullets are produced by drawing fibers from glass with strong heating. They are very durable, resistant to fading and fading from bright sunlight, have good vapor permeability. This type of wallpaper coating is most often used for painting, but more and more often manufacturers produce such samples that are already processed from the front side and do not need staining.

Wallpaper for painting

Wallpaper for painting is the most common and practical type of ceiling decoration. They are available on a paper or non-woven basis, as well as on the basis of fiberglass. They are very durable and wear-resistant and most often endowed with the features of the material from which they are made. Therefore, when gluing them to the ceiling, you must adhere to the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

Preparing the ceiling for pasting

Before you glue the wallpaper on the ceiling, you need to carefully prepare the surface. First of all, you need to remove the old coating - whitewash, paint or old wallpaper. Paint can be removed using a grinder with a metal brush or a special solvent. The surface of whitewashing can be cleaned by abundantly moistening it with hot water and then washing with a sponge.

If the ceiling is covered with an old layer of plaster, then first of all it must be checked for integrity, by tapping - the voids must be removed and plastered again.

After cleaning from the previous coating, the surface needs to be primed, wiped cracks and irregularities with putty and again treated with a primer. Only after carrying out these procedures can you glue the ceiling.
But, depending on the material from which the ceiling is made, there are nuances in its preparation.

Concrete ceiling

Since the concrete surface has a rough and granular texture, before gluing the wallpaper coating it requires proper processing, the minimum is several layers of gypsum primer.
Also, the concrete ceiling can be treated with a special composition, on the basis of quartz sand - concrete contact. It fills all the bumps and, after drying, forms a monolithic structure. The main thing is to apply it not in even lines, but in an overlap.

Substrates for wallpaper - this is a linen material made of polyurethane or natural cork, it increases the adhesion between the concrete surface and the wallpaper. Such substrates are glued directly to concrete with special adhesive, and already directly on them you can stick wallpapers.

Plastering and puttying is the most common way of processing concrete walls before wallpapering, especially in new buildings. Plastering fills all cracks and small pits, the subsequent layer of primer makes the surface smooth. After this, you need to finish the coating with plaster, primer, putty and wipe with fine-grained sandpaper.

OSB or plywood ceiling

OSB is an oriented particle board made of several layers of pressed wood chips glued together using resins, synthetic wax and boric acid. Since these plates create a perfectly smooth surface, they often serve as a base to which other facing materials, including wallpaper, are attached.

Before you paste the wallpaper on the ceiling from OSB it should be prepared. To do this, you need to close up all the connecting seams, as well as traces of fastening with screws using a fine building mesh - sickle and putty. After this, the surface should be treated with a primer in several layers.

The preparation of the ceiling from plywood for wallpapering is the same, because plywood is also a multilayer plate, but consisting of the number of layers of veneer - thin sheets of wood.

Plasterboard ceiling

Before gluing the wallpaper on the ceiling, the gypsum plasterboard surface must first be treated with an acrylic primer, which will provide good adhesion of the surfaces, and also prevent the development of mold and fungus. Then it is necessary to close the joints between the sheets, firmly gluing a sickle between them, and fill the cracks with putty.

Then wipe the surface with fine-grained sandpaper.

Despite the fact that the ceiling made of drywall is perfectly even, it must be puttied over the entire area and primed.

How to choose glue and how to dilute it correctly

The correct type of glue determines how the wallpaper will hold. It is necessary to take into account the material and weight of the wallpaper, humidity and temperature of the room to be glued, as well as the basis of the ceiling surface.
Good glue is quickly and easily diluted with water, lumps do not form in it, and when applied to wallpaper, they do not curl around the edges. Excellent glue does not leave stains on the wallpaper and is easily removed with a rag, without leaving any residue, and also wash it off from hands and tools.
Glue happens:

  • Universal - for any type of wallpaper coating
  • Special - a special composition for each type of wallpaper separately.
  • For fiberglass.

Universal adhesive in a concentrated solution, reducing the amount of water by 10-15%, can be used instead of a special one, even when gluing wallpaper on the ceiling.

The adhesive on the ceiling should be so thick that it does not drip from above.

Cutting wallpaper with a selection of patterns

Before you start cutting wallpaper, you need to lay a film on the floor or use a construction table. When cutting wallpaper strips without a pattern, you need to add 8-10 cm in reserve to the length of the canvas. If there is a picture on the wallpaper, then when cropping, you need to add the length of the rapport, adhering to the following recommendations:

  • With the selection of a pattern without offset, all the stripes should start the same way. If the step of the picture, for example, is 35 cm, and the ceiling length is 150 cm, then you need to measure the length of the canvas a multiple of 35 plus a margin of centimeters 5. In this case, 180 cm (35 * 5 + 5).
  • With the selection of a pattern with an offset - you need to do the same, but taking into account the fact that the stripes should be repeated through one, therefore for convenience they can be numbered with a pencil on the wrong side.
  • Cut the desired length of the blade with a knife or scissors.

Pasting the ceiling

It is better to glue the wallpaper on the ceiling together, it is very difficult to do it yourself, especially in large rooms.
Step by step instructions for sticking wallpaper on the ceiling:

  • Put the strip of wallpaper face down and apply glue on it - from the middle to the edges, and then fold the panel in the middle with the wrong side inwards - two edges to the center and leave to soak for 10 minutes.
  • When gluing non-woven fabrics, glue is applied only to the surface of the ceiling, and some vinyl ones - to the wallpaper and to the surface of the ceiling.
  • Wallpapering on the ceiling starts from the wall with the least viewed point and you need to strictly adhere to the marking lines.
  • The wallpaper strip, folded into a soft accordion, rises to the ceiling. It should be gradually laid out, carefully smoothing from the center to the edges in width.
  • Walk along the joints of glued wallpapers with a special rubber roller and wipe off any excess glue.
  • At the place where the chandelier should be, make an incision crosswise and pass the wires through the hole.
  • When wallpapering, you need to do a little overlap on the wall, and then trim the excess.
  • The pasted ceiling should be left to dry for about a day, without drafts.

How to dock wallpaper

The choice of method for joining wallpaper strips depends on the pattern printed on the wallpaper, and the recommended method is always indicated when marking the wallpaper by the manufacturer. It happens:

  • Oncoming - canvases are glued towards each other.
  • Free - free docking that does not require a matching ornament or pattern.
  • Offset - each next sheet is glued to the previous lap by 10-15 mm.
  • Direct - butt gluing panels.

How to glue wallpaper near the lamp, manipulation with electricity

Before starting work on pasting the ceiling with a wallpaper, it is necessary to close the windows and doors and turn off the power to the room. After that, it is necessary to remove the chandelier and close the wires with masking tape. In the wallpaper strip in the marked place, you need to cut a hole crosswise, taking into account that the decorative overlay of the lamp will close the slot.

Mount the chandelier in place only after the wallpaper is completely dry.

Types of Wallpaper

Depending on the material of manufacture, today the following coatings are presented:

  • Traditional paper is the easiest option. However, it is worth considering that they are not suitable for all rooms. In the bathroom and kitchen you will have to change them very soon. Therefore, leave paper canvases for rooms where there is no moisture and steam.
  • Vinyls are distinguished by original patterns, various reliefs, and a variety of colors. Ceiling imperfections are eliminated during gluing. Vinyl wallpapers are so durable that they can withstand wet cleaning and will not fade from sunlight, in addition, they are scratch resistant.

But it should be remembered that with high humidity there is a risk of fungus formation and mold. To prevent this, an antiseptic must first be applied to the ceiling, and then primed. It is not necessary to apply glue to the wallpaper itself, only to the surface prepared for work.

  • Non-woven wallpaper also lends itself to wet cleaning, they can be used for painting. They are quite suitable for the bathroom.
  • In addition to non-woven, you can use fiberglass wallpaper. They are able to withstand up to twenty stains. They include natural materials. They are so durable that the life of this coating reaches 30 years.
  • Traditional wallpaper can be replaced with liquid. They also have their advantages. In addition to being environmentally friendly, elastic and anti-static, any damaged area can be replaced with a new one, and this will not be noticeable.

Priming

Finally, you cleaned the ceiling of old paintings, tiles, dirt, lime, putty and allowed to dry, it's time to start the primer. Special compounds improve the adhesion of building materials.

Therefore, it is necessary to prime the ceiling if you want the wallpaper to adhere well and stay as long as possible on the surface.

The range of primers is diverse. There are cheaper ones. Some people prefer to use those that contain components that can prevent the formation of fungus and mold. The primer is applied with a roller, brush and spray. Some compounds require processing the ceiling several times.

How to glue?

We use a composition that is intended for a certain type of wallpaper. If it is paper, the usual one will do. For non-woven fabrics, we select only the one that is intended for heavy wallpapers. We follow the instructions that are on each package.

We spread glue in the same way as for walls. Pour dry powder gradually in a thin stream, stirring continuously. Then with the help of the mixer we achieve a homogeneous mass without lumps. Keep diluted glue no more than five days, having previously closed the container well.

Accordingly, special compositions are used for liquid and glass-walled wallpapers. Some use an old proven paste and cook it themselves. But this method is only suitable for paper wallpapers.

Features of the pasting process

It’s not so easy to glue wallpaper on the ceiling. Therefore, it is better to do this together. When the surface is clean, dry and completely ready, you can proceed.

Many immediately have a question: where to start. It will be correct if you stick the canvas along the side walls. Then the joints will not be noticeable in daylight.

First you need to mark the entire surface. From the side wall, measure the width of the roll (it is better to use meter-long wallpapers). Do the same on the other hand, use a ruler and a pencil to draw a line. At the joints of the wallpaper it is permissible to use a paper masking tape, which in the future will save from peeling the wallpaper.

When marking the wallpaper in a roll, pay attention to what kind of drawing you have, whether you need to customize it. Number all the sheets received and fold them in the correct order.

Spread the sheet with glue and let it soak. Work on the part of the ceiling to be glued. Thoroughly coat on the corner and at the joints.

Then attach the first sheet to the ceiling and spread it with a roller from the middle to the edges. We move from the inside of the room to the window. If the walls are rounded, then you will have to tinker a bit with the corners. You have to make small cuts on the wallpaper, so that they are successfully located on the surface.

Wipe off excess glue with a soft cloth, watch carefully so that no bubbles form. Where lamps and chandeliers are located, make a neat incision in the form of a cross, thread the wires and press the wallpaper tightly to the ceiling. When pasting is completed, evaluate the result. Pay attention to whether there are no glued pieces and bubbles.

Sticker decors

Baguettes not only serve as decoration of the ceiling, but also hide some defects at the joints. There are two options for sticking. In the first case, ceiling skirtings are glued, and then wallpaper. In the second case, baguettes are glued on top of the wallpaper, which is much more complicated.

In order for the ceiling to look beautiful, you need to purchase special glue, cut the trims well and evenly. And for this it is better to purchase a special device for cutting - a miter box.

There are many decorative elements that will decorate the ceiling. It all depends on your imagination and skill. It can be decorative beams - gypsum, polyurethane, foam. The ceiling can also be decorated with decorative plaster.

Sockets will also be appropriate - these are elements of stucco molding. They are mounted near chandeliers and lamps.

Tips & Tricks

Consider several important factors:

  • 110 g / m2 - maximum permissible density for ceiling wallpaper. In a small room, plain or with a fine pattern will be appropriate. Leave large prints for large rooms and high ceilings. If the ceiling system is multi-level, there is reason to experiment with wallpapers of different textures. Well and most importantly, make the correct calculations, keep in mind that the figure will have to be customized.

  • Competent decor will help to hide flaws, visually change the space. It is not necessary to invite professionals, you can solve this problem yourself. The main thing is to understand what you prefer. It is easiest to paint, and, as one of the options, choose a paint of different colors and thus divide the room into zones with multi-functional living space.

  • Another way to achieve the same effect is to paste over the ceiling with two types of wallpaper, deciding for which areas to choose one or another texture.

You can glue applications, but this is applicable for children. This also makes it possible to hide irregularities or even spots. Buy ready-made stickers or make them yourself - it's up to you.

Good examples and beautiful options

Modern design has no boundaries. Thanks to the original design of the ceiling, you can make any room unusual. When wallpapering in the hall, bedroom, nursery, you can consider such an option as photo wallpaper.

With the help of fabric, you can transform any ceiling, and with it the entire space.

There are other ways. You can make stencils with your own hands. Occupation is exciting for both adults and children.

A multilayer and interesting design using various elements can be created from drywall. Exotic lovers can choose something extravagant, for example, bamboo decorations or oriental style. If you have the talent of an artist, you have a great opportunity to make your ceiling a work of art and paint bright flowers or a seascape there.

In general, sticking wallpaper on the ceiling and decorating with various materials is a very exciting experience. Do not forget to take into account all the nuances, and your ceiling will delight you and delight the guests.

How to stick wallpaper on the ceiling correctly

The most widespread and demanded finishing materials for today are ceiling wallpapers. You should know and distinguish their types and properties.

Wallpaper are:

  • By paper. A cheaper option for redecorating an apartment.
  • Non-woven. Very durable and flexible. The surfaces pasted with such wallpaper have a deep and relief pattern.
  • Vinyl. Pretty popular for today. They are distinguished by their moisture resistance and durability.
  • Liquid. Noble and peculiar, seamless covering from ecological material.

Before you start wallpapering, you should prepare the ceiling.

When choosing wallpaper on the ceiling, proceed from the number of helpers. It’s easy to cope with non-woven, vinyl and liquid wallpapers on your own. But with paper material, the process is more complicated and longer.

You can cook cut strips of wallpaper immediately, or cut the required length in stages in the process of gluing. It is advisable to draw a line on the ceiling, relative to which the first strip will lie. Draw it with a tape measure and pencil, clearly and evenly. Then you can start gluing the wallpaper itself to the ceiling. Depending on the type of wallpaper, glue the surface or strip of wallpaper with glue. Glue it to the ceiling strictly along the strip marked with a pencil. Having done everything correctly and accurately, the subsequent stripes will lie flat.

How to paste wallpaper on the ceiling alone

Staying alone with such a task is not scary, the main thing is to approach such an important process responsibly.

For wallpapering with your own hands, it is better to give preference to non-woven trellises. It is easier to work with such material, and even a beginner can cope on their own.

Non-woven wallpaper is the best material for the ceiling. When dried, they do not disperse and perfectly hide small flaws on the ceiling.

For wallpapering, one will need:

  • Material,
  • Scissors,
  • Pencil,
  • Roulette,
  • Glue brush,
  • Roller or plastic spatula,
  • Container for mixing glue.

To work alone, you will need to place a plane for movement, at least along one strip - these can be tables or bedside tables. Without such an important moment, nothing will come of it. You should also thoroughly wash the floors in the room so that in the process of work not to stain the material.

Equal and high-quality gluing of the front page is the key to the success of the whole process!

They made a choice in favor of non-woven wallpaper, then it is necessary to distribute the adhesive on the ceiling along the width of the strip and then carefully, gradually, apply the cut strip to the ceiling. Glue the canvas should be from the middle of the strip to the edges. Expel the resulting bubbles immediately. Remove excess glue from the edges instantly.

You should start work by unpacking a roll of wallpaper. Then you need to measure the required length of the strip, and it is better to make a margin of a few centimeters. It will be possible to cut off excess after gluing

If paper paper is preferred, then sticking will be harder and longer. The measured strip should be smeared with glue and folded with an accordion for 10 minutes for impregnation. Then gently, not allowing deoxidation, deformation and tearing of the canvas, glue the strip to the ceiling. After spreading the next strip with glue, the remaining glue should be removed from the surface with a damp cloth.

After gluing the first strip - cut off the excess wallpaper at the edges, if necessary, re-glue the necessary area with glue.

Having mastered the first strip, the next glue will be much easier.

Wallpaper or ceiling tile: what to glue first

Having decided to make repairs in the room and update the already boring atmosphere, wallpapers and ceiling tiles will look like a profitable option. First of all, the ceiling tile is glued, then the ceiling plinth and, last but not least, the wallpaper. That is how to do it right and rationally!

It is not necessary to prepare a perfectly even ceiling, the tile will perfectly smooth out all the bumps.

Ceiling tiles are laid on special glue or putty.

The edges of the tiles are easily trimmed with a clerical knife. Do not worry if it doesn’t work out quite evenly - all the flaws will be hidden under the skirting board.

Work with tiles occurs in several stages:

  1. Prepare the surface in terms of removing debris and dust.
  2. Determine the location for the first tile.
  3. Using glue or putty, apply a thin layer around the perimeter of the tile and apply it to the ceiling. Hold each tile with your fingers for several minutes.
  4. Inspect the entire ceiling and remove excess glue or putty, not allowing it to dry.

After placing the tiles on the ceiling, the ceiling plinth is glued, and wallpaper will be brought under it. The baseboard is glued to the same putty or glue, in the same way.

Focus on seamless ceiling tiles, visually the ceiling will look perfectly even!

Is it possible to glue the ceiling tiles on the wallpaper and why

Physically, pasting ceiling tiles on the wallpaper is possible, but from the point of view of practicality in operation, it is not recommended. Such a tile is glued only to the ideal ceiling in this regard. Old whitewash, wallpaper or paint does not fit the foundation. Everything is removed, blurred and peeled. At the end, the ceiling must be treated with a special primer.

You can glue the ceiling tiles in several ways:

  • Starting from the corner of the room, in straight rows. This method is the most common and simple.
  • From the center of the ceiling - diamonds. The rows lie diagonally. In this case, more material will be used up.

Schematic representation of the correct sequence of gluing tiles on the ceiling with the diagonal method

The process of gluing ceiling tiles takes less time, unlike other building materials. At the same time, the amount of garbage in the apartment is also minimal.

An excellent alternative to special tile adhesive is putty.

In general, ceiling tiles are the best option to design your ceiling inexpensively and beautifully.

How to glue wallpaper on a drywall ceiling without errors

The installation of the ceiling with plasterboard is completed, now it should be glued wallpaper. The process of gluing wallpaper on drywall is no different from gluing all the same wallpaper on a “normal” ceiling. The only pleasant thing in this process will be a perfectly flat surface.

You can glue wallpaper on drywall:

  • On the surface of drywall (a simpler, but ineffective way),
  • First put a layer of putty and primer on the drywall

The joints on drywall and the joints between the strips of wallpaper should in no case coincide. Visually it will be noticeable and the view will be damaged

Before gluing the wallpaper, paint the drywall with white paint - this will visually increase the room. Just do not forget to walk along the painted ceiling with a primer!

What wallpaper is better to glue on the ceiling in the apartment

The choice of wallpaper for the ceiling comes from their purpose and what you want in the end.

By purpose, wallpaper on the ceiling can be divided into:

  • Wallpaper with a finished relief pattern.
  • Wallpaper for painting.

If the selected wallpaper with a picture, when calculating the required number of rolls, consider the cost of the material for its selection

And in the first and second case, the wallpaper is made of different materials. This factor should be given special significance. A more difficult option in the process of gluing will be paper wallpaper. Significantly better - liquid or wallpaper on a non-woven and vinyl basis.

Important preparation of the ceiling before wallpapering

To prepare the ceiling before wallpapering correctly - to make the further process easier.

What work should be done:

  • Remove plaster, paint, loose pieces of whitewash from the ceiling.
  • To clean a surface with large emery paper.
  • Putty joints between plates and cracks.
  • Prime the ceiling.

Primed ceiling is not necessary, but recommended. On such a surface, the wallpaper is better laid down and the fungus with mold is not terrible

These are the basic rules for preparing the ceiling. But there are many nuances that should be taken into account with the features of the material, conditions, time and budget.

DIY wallpapering on the ceiling (video)

Wallpaper on the ceiling is a good alternative to expensive decoration materials. A variety of modern paintings and colors, allow you to decorate the ceiling exclusively according to the individual taste of each demanding owner. With the help of wallpaper on the ceiling, it became possible to divide the room into separate zones of coziness and comfort, to make it warmer and lighter.

Is it possible to stick wallpaper on which ceiling surface?

Tapestries on the ceiling are an excellent substitute for paint (whitewashing) and decorative plaster. With their help, you can:

  • hide minor surface defects,
  • get any desired type of ceiling space - a huge selection of textures, colors and patterns (patterns) allows you to realize any imagination of designers or homeowners,
  • relatively inexpensive to carry out repairs.

When can

There are no restrictions on the material of which the ceiling is made or sheathed, for the wallpaper. They can be glued onto concrete, plaster, drywall sheets, OSB or plywood. The absence of hypoallergenic components in the composition of wallpaper and glue allows the use of trellis in any residential premises, including in the children's room and bedroom.

When not

Not always decorating the ceiling with the wallpaper gives the desired result. It is better to refrain from wallpapering in the following cases:

  • in old houses with their narrow floor panels and large joining seams. Leveling the surface will take a lot of time and cost an impressive amount. Together with the cost of decorating the ceiling with wallpaper, repairs will cost almost the same money as a stretch ceiling. Therefore, here you need to weigh everything and calculate,
  • in the kitchen and in the bathroom, hot humid air leads to a rapid lagging of the trellis canvas from the surface,
  • in small premises, wallpaper often doesn’t look best at the top. There are two problems: the color and (or) the relief of the trellis on the ceiling visually reduces the size of the room even more and the joints of the sheets are more contrasting in them, unlike large rooms.

What wallpaper is better to use for pasting the stream

High-quality repair is impossible without carefully selected material. This fully applies to ceiling trellises. Here are some important nuances.

  • The variety of wallpapers on sale does not mean that all of them can be glued to the ceiling. Any suitable for walls - if you follow the technology, they will hold perfectly. The ceiling needs ceiling, lighter and denser. About this, a corresponding inscription is applied to the packaging label. What if the wallpaper really liked, but there is no inscription? Another type of marking will help here: the weight of the wallpaper sheet. For gluing on the ceiling, this figure for trellises should not exceed 110 g / m 2. Through trial and error, experts found that it is best to buy wallpaper weighing 150 g / m 2 for painting - they do not stretch, and do not shrink under a layer of paint, and also hide small irregularities well.
  • Wallpaper should not be thick. Even if they are lightweight, it is better to refuse such a purchase - they quickly become soaked and torn during operation, and are also worse held by glue.
  • It is very difficult to work with wide wallpaper on the ceiling. Therefore, finishers recommend buying tapestries 53 or 60 cm wide.
  • Do not look for sales of products of foreign brands - they simply do not produce ceiling wallpapers. Exception - trellis for painting. You can use wall weights of not more than 150 g / m 2.
  • Designers do not recommend buying trellises of bright colors for an apartment. They look out of place in any interior, regardless of the style of design. The most acceptable options are white or pastel colors of other colors.
  • When performing finishing work alone, only non-woven tapestries are needed - they do not need to be glued with glue, which simplifies the gluing of sheets on the ceiling (under the non-woven base, an adhesive mass is applied to the ceiling surface).

Influences the technology and quality of gluing the type of wallpaper.

Types of ceiling trellises

For the ceiling, manufacturers offer paper, non-woven, vinyl on paper or non-woven basis and textile wallpaper.

Paper. Paper trellises belong to the cheapest category of this type of finishing materials. However, the cost of the material is fully consistent with the quality (thin, when applied to an uneven surface, emphasize all defects of the ceiling) and durability - will last about 5 years.

Non-woven. Non-woven wallpaper in everyday life is called vinyl and textile wallpaper with a non-woven base, as well as pure non-woven. Here we are talking about directly non-woven wallpaper. They are multi-layered, with a relief pattern. They are bought mainly for coloring. The gluing technology is unusual - the glue is applied to the surface to be glued.Ideal for ceiling:

  • do not require preliminary cutting,
  • well hide surface imperfections,
  • allow you to perform work alone.

Prices are much higher than paper trellises, but affordable for the middle class.

Vinyl. Vinyl trellis can have a paper or non-woven backing. The type of base determines the technology of gluing: the type of glue and the method of its application. They are durable, hide minor defects of the ceiling due to the dense structure and embossed texture. At a cost affordable to the mass buyer.

Textile. Textile trellis is a fabric applied on a paper or non-woven base (linen, silk, viscose, etc.). Glued on the basis of technology. They create a very rich finish. Due to the high price, they are available only to affluent consumers.

And if wallpapering precedes painting

Trellis can be painted on the ceiling in the same way as on the walls. Manufacturers offer non-woven and vinyl wallpaper on the ceiling for painting. Practice shows that it is much easier to paint non-woven trellis sheets on the ceiling.

Vinyl after applying a layer of paint begins to bubble, which is tolerant on the walls and is a critical flaw on the ceiling. It is necessary immediately after applying the paint to roll the wallpaper to the ceiling with a rubber roller.

To summarize. What wallpaper to choose for the ceiling - it's up to the owners of the apartment (house). This is primarily determined by financial capabilities. In the second, such factors as: type of room, technology of pasting, requirement for texture and coloring.

Choosing glue for ceiling wallpaper

An important point in preparing for decorating the ceiling with wallpaper is the choice of glue. Indeed, here on the trellis sheets there is an attractive force tens of times greater than on the wall. Therefore, we need specialized adhesives for the bases of wallpaper (universal types of glue do not hold wallpaper well on the ceiling).

Details about the types of glue, their composition and the level of adhesion to various materials (the ceiling can be concrete, wood, drywall) of different types of wallpaper can be found in the material "How to choose the glue for wallpaper?".

Materials and Tools

Wallpapering on the ceiling is impossible without the acquisition of appropriate materials, a complete set of tools and fixtures. To work, you will need:

  • ceiling wallpaper,
  • primer
  • wallpaper glue
  • seam tape between the sheets of wallpaper (preferably),
  • stepladder (can be replaced with a building platform or a strong table),
  • bucket or basin for stirring glue,
  • a screwdriver or a drill with a mixer nozzle for preparing an adhesive mass (can be stirred manually with any oblong object, up to your own hand),
  • chopping cord (chalk, construction pencil),
  • 5 m tape measure
  • in the absence of a chopping cord, you will need a long straight rail (the best option is the rule) for drawing a wallpaper line on the ceiling,
  • stationery knife with a set of interchangeable blades,
  • a roller with a cuvette or a wide brush with soft hair for applying glue,
  • a small brush for gluing hard-to-reach spots with glue when working with non-woven wallpaper - the adhesive mass is applied to the ceiling,
  • a dense roller for pressing the canvas of the trellis (it is difficult to press the wallpaper sheet to the ceiling with a trowel),
  • a wide metal spatula for cutting wallpaper after gluing (if you plan to cut the sheets of trellis in size in advance, it will not be required),
  • soft cloth or rags to remove glue that protrudes onto the surface of the wallpaper.

Glue preparation

The durability of the wallpaper on the ceiling depends not only on the brand of the selected glue, but also on its preparation. Typically, recommendations for diluting a dry adhesive mass are printed on the packaging. Recall the main points:

  1. in a sufficiently large container, pure water is poured in the amount indicated on the package,
  2. the water is stirred mechanically (a screwdriver or a drill with a mixer nozzle) or manually until a funnel is formed,
  3. the dry mixture is slowly poured into the water near the edge of the container,
  4. after the whole pack is in water, the composition is mixed for about 10 minutes,
  5. after stirring, the prepared glue is set for 8-15 minutes to swell (more accurate time is indicated on the package),
  6. after ripening, the adhesive mass is mixed again for 5-10 minutes.

However, in some cases there are nuances about which there is no information on the packaging material. If in doubt, we advise you to see the work "How to choose glue for wallpaper?".

Wallpaper Cutting

Preparing wallpaper sheets for gluing is not a difficult operation. Purely non-woven wallpaper, experts generally advise cropping on the ceiling, after gluing. This simple technique allows you to glue the ceiling wallpaper alone.

The rest is cut with an overlap of 3-5 cm on each side, which eliminates errors in length. The excess after gluing the pallet with a wide spatula and a construction knife is cut off. If there is a pattern or pattern, they are first combined, and then the sheets are cut to the desired size.

Pasting Instructions

The instructions on “how to paste the ceiling with wallpaper” discusses all possible gluing options related to the type and type of wallpaper, the number of employees (one, two, a group) and the characteristics of the room.

First, we highlight the general work characteristic of all types of wallpaper.

1. Glue is applied to the prepared trellis or ceiling with a roller or brush. Where to apply it correctly, you can see in the table. 1.

Table 1.

Type of wallpaperGlue application area

Non-woven-+
Paper based vinyl+-
Vinyl non-woven based++

2. The spread sheet of wallpaper is folded with adhesive mass to each other so that the ends of the sheet converge approximately in the middle and are left for some time for impregnation (see table. 2).

Table 2.

Type of trellis baseImpregnation time, min
Lightweight Paper Trellis3-6
Thick Paper Trellis5-8
Paper based vinyl7-10
Vinyl non-woven based10-15

3. The first sheet is glued. One side should go exactly along the line, the other should go to the side wall about 1.5 cm. The cloth tightly rolls onto the ceiling with your hands, spatula or rubber roller.

Work with sheets smeared with glue is carried out at least by two (when working with meter trellises you need the help of a third person) - one glues, the second supports the wallpaper, adjusts their location, supplies tools or glue if necessary re-grease the joints. Non-woven trellis can be glued by a beginner with his own hands and alone.

4. Until the trellis is strongly seized with glue, trimmed wall-paper wallpaper with a wide spatula and knife with removable blades. If you plan to install a ceiling plinth, the latter is applied to the wallpaper and trimmed with trellis.

5. The following sheets are glued. Particular attention should be paid to the joints. Trellis should not go on top of each other and not leave even a micron distance between them. After the seams, it is advisable to roll a few with a rubber roller (after the hands there may be gaps between the sheets).

Attention: small wrinkles on all types of trellis will smooth out on their own.

Where to start

Among the finishers there is no consensus on where to start wallpapering. Some offer gluing from the wall, others from the center of the ceiling. In the opinion of the editors, there is no big difference in the design and concealment of the seams in both methods. But material consumption at the beginning of gluing from the center will increase by exactly one sheet. Therefore, where and how to paste the wallpaper on the ceiling is up to the owners of the apartment.

How to paste over corners

There are some difficulties when pasting corners (the places of convergence of joints between adjacent walls and the ceiling and walls), which is clearly visible in the photo

The algorithm of actions is as follows:

  1. wallpaper cloth starts on the wall,
  2. with a pencil on the trellis marks the place of convergence of the joints of the ceiling with the walls,
  3. perpendicular to the sheet, an incision is made to the mark, after which gluing can continue.

How to bypass pipes

A more complicated option with pipes. Here the wallpaper is pasted up to the pipes. Then, the contact point of the wallpaper sheet with the obstacle is noted. With scissors or a knife, an incision is made to the mark from the end of the sheet. A hole is cut in the trellises of a slightly smaller diameter than the pipe. The barrier is carefully pasted over, while the wallpaper that came onto the pipe is immediately cut with a knife.

How to hide joints

It is impossible to completely hide the joints - there are no such technologies. But to mask them a bit with the help of the light flux is real. To do this, the seams should be parallel to the light from the window. Helps hide joints and coloring trellis. This can be done with a finishing micro-putty (for example, Sadolin, Sheetrock, Rothband paste).

The technology is this: the first coat of paint is applied, then the surface is putty. After the putty dries, it is sanded with P200 sandpaper, and then painted again. If you first putty and then paint, then in the places of putty the surface texture will change. If you withstand the technology completely, then the texture does not change, and the seams completely disappear. The same operation must be done for the walls.

For painting ceilings, it is recommended that a very matte (experts sometimes say deep-opaque) paint (for example, Tikkurila euro7, Dulux, Dufa) is better to dilute the second layer of paint with water so that it does not dry so quickly and you cannot see the tracks from the roller. When using semi-gloss or glossy paint, traces of the roller may be visible, emphasizing the curvature of the ceiling.

Conclusion

Finishing the ceiling with wallpaper allows you to get an original design, with a very beautiful ceiling space. All work can be done independently. The cost of buying materials is second only to paint work, which allows the bulk of consumers to take this opportunity.
